A Simple Guide to Buying and Installing Christmas Lights

A Simple Guide to Buying and Installing Christmas Lights

No Christmas tree is complete without beautiful twinkling Christmas lights, but when it comes to finding the right lights and installing them correctly, it can feel a little overwhelming.

Fear not, this simple guide will help you decide which lights are best for your type of tree or other areas of your home and how to install them in the best way.

What are the different types of Christmas lights?

The first thing you need to decide is what type of Christmas lights you’d like. Believe it or not, they do vary in style and each different type creates a different look and feel on your tree.

String lights

Layout: Bulbs are spaced evenly apart along the cable (usually every 5–10cm).

Look: Classic fairy light style with a twinkly, traditional spread of light.

Best for: General decorating such as wrapping trees, draping around windows, garlands, or staircases.

Compact lights

Layout: Similar to string lights but with bulbs placed much closer together (short spacing, often just a few mm).

Look: Gives a uniform, continuous glow rather than individual dots of light. Think of it as halfway between string and cluster lights but brighter but tidier.

Best for: Wrapping Christmas trees neatly, achieving an even glow without dark gaps.

Cluster lights

Layout: Bulbs are bunched closely together in clusters along the wire.

Look: Creates a denser, brighter, fuller effect compared to string lights. Much more sparkle because there are more bulbs per metre.

Best for: A ‘wow’ effect on Christmas trees, mantelpieces, or as a statement display indoors/outdoors.

How many lights do you need for your Christmas tree?

The length of lights you need really depends on the height of your tree.

How many lights for a 5ft tree?

For a 5ft tree you’ll need around 400 to 500 lights.

How many lights for a 6ft tree?

For a 6ft tree we recommend 750-1000 lights.

How many lights for a 7ft tree?

For a large 7ft tree, go for 1000 to 1500 Christmas lights.

What’s the easiest way of hanging or installing Christmas lights?

Getting tangled in Christmas lights isn’t ideal.

How to install Christmas lights on your tree

The best way to put Christmas lights on a tree is to start at the bottom and wrap them horizontally or vertically around the tree. To create some depth, push some lights deeper into the branches.

Alternatively, a more convenient option is to purchase a pre-lit tree. That means you haven’t got to worry about wrapping lights every year!

How to attach Christmas lights on your house

Outdoor lights instantly make your home feel festive, but installing them safely is key. Here’s how to get it right:

1. Choose the correct lights

Make sure the lights you’re using are labelled IP44-rated or higher, meaning they’re suitable for outdoor use. Indoor lights should never be used outside.

2. Plan your layout

Before you start climbing ladders, decide where your lights will go—along the roofline, around windows, across fences, or around your porch.
Measure the area first so you know exactly how many metres of lights you need.

3. Use proper fixings

Avoid nails or staples which can pierce the cable. Instead, use:

  • Gutter hooks

  • Adhesive light clips

  • Brick clips

4. Start from the power source

Begin installing from the plug or extension socket and work your way outwards. This avoids awkward rewiring at the end. Use a weatherproof outdoor plug or a covered extension lead to keep everything safe.

5. Take your time

Keep the cable straight and avoid pulling lights too tight. Step back every now and then to make sure they’re aligned and evenly spaced.

How to install Christmas lights in other areas of your home

Christmas lights aren’t just for your tree. Here are some of the best (and easiest) ways to use them around your home:

Around windows and doors

Use clear adhesive hooks or suction cups to outline frames with fairy lights or hang curtain lights. This adds a warm glow from inside and looks magical from outside.

On staircases

Wrap string or compact lights around your banister (our multi-purpose door lights are a great option) securing them with cable ties or ribbon. Pair with garlands for an extra luxurious look.

On mantels and shelves

Cluster lights work especially well here. Lay them along your mantelpiece, weaving them between decorations for a bright, full effect.

Inside lanterns or vases

Battery-operated micro lights can be placed inside lanterns, glass jars, or vases to create a cosy centrepiece.

Safety tips when installing Christmas lights

A festive home is wonderful but safety comes first. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Check cables for any damage before plugging in.

  • Don’t overload sockets especially with older homes.

  • Use timers or smart plugs to avoid leaving lights on overnight.

  • Keep lights away from heat sources such as radiators, fires, or candles.

  • Turn everything off before going to bed or leaving the house.

Final touches

Once everything is up, switch the lights on and adjust as needed. Don’t be afraid to move branches, fluff your tree, or re-space a few bulbs as small adjustments make a big difference to the final look.

Whether you're decorating a modest space or transforming your whole home into a winter wonderland, the right Christmas lights will elevate the atmosphere instantly. With the tips in this guide, you’ll be able to choose the perfect lights and install them confidently.
